Hayagreeva / Hayagriva Muddy

Hayagreeva / Hayagriva muddy

Hayagreeva / Hayagriva muddy is an authentic sweet from Karnataka. This is done on special occasions and can be done very easily.  There was a store behind this dish which is older then 500 years ago..
According to mythology great devotee named Daivajña Brahmin community was casting an idol of Lord Gaṇapati, when it shaped itself in the image of Lord Hayagriva. Sarvabhauma Sri Vadiraja Guru Swamiji had a dream about this legend which inspired him to approach that devotee and take the idol from him in reverence. He then installed it in Shri Sode Vadiraja Mutt. Since then it has been worshipped there as the originating god of the Daivajnya Brahmin community.
The sweet dish prepared using bengal gram and jaggery  was offered as "naivdyam" to God daily, which is followed even today in Sode vadiraja matt., Hence the dish got the name as "hayagreeva" or "hayagriva maddi". 1 cup gram dhal
1 cup powdered jaggery
½ cup shredded coconut
2 tbsp ghee
1 tsp cardamom powder
2 tbsp raisins
1 tbsp cashews

Method:

  • Pressure cook  gram dhal with 2 ½ cups of water for 2 ~ 3 whistle till soft.
  • Turn off the heat and allow it to cool. After pressure drops, drain the water and gently mash it.
  • Combine jaggery, gram dhal and 1 tbsp of ghee and heat it in medium low heat.
  • Go on stirring until mixture thickens ( it will take approx 20 ~ 40 minutes, depends on the heat) and leaves the side. Add cardamom powder and turn off the heat.
  • Fry cashews and raisins in the remaining ghee and add to the mixture.

Blessings of good is so important and I strongly believe in it. That hayagriva offered to Ganesha is certainly one way of appreciating god's presence.
