Chapati or Roti

Chapatis or Roti is a flat unleavened bread which  are made from a firm but pliable dough made from whole wheat flour and cooked on a tawa and consumed in many parts of Asia.

Ingredients:

Whole wheat flour - 11/2 cup
Oil - 3 tsp
Warm water - ½ cup or as required
Salt - To taste
Wheat flour - for dusting
Oil - as required for drizzling

Method:

  • In a large bowl , Mix Flour & salt very well.
  • Add oil and mix again.
  • Slowly add warm water and knead to form a soft dough & shape it in to ball shape & apply 2 drops of oil to coat it.
  • Cover the dough & rest it for at least for 20 mins.
  • After 20 minutes, knead the dough again & divide it in to equal shape balls. For above measurement we can make 8 ~ 9 balls.
  • Dust the rolling surface with little flour & Flat the dough ball and dip in dusting flour.
  • Using a rolling pin, roll each balls into 9" flat disc. Mean while heat the tawa or skillet in medium heat.
  • Place the rolled chapati on the tawa. When bubbles start to form, turn to other side and after 10 seconds press the edges of chapati with spatula or with cloth where bubbles form to pop up it like a balloon.
  • Add little oil over the edges & in middle and flip it over.
  • Continue with rest of chapati & Serve hot any gravy.

Note:  Roll chapati in equal thickness & while rolling don't turn chapati frequently.  While placing on tawa make sure top of the rolled chapati is on the hot surface of the tawa, this will help chapati to balloon up.
